I was very excited about being asked to present a travel video editing workshop at this years Traverse Travel Bloggers Conference. It is set to be a great event with Travel Industry Experts such as Steve Keenan, Mark Frary and Tnooz Editor Kevin May gracing the stage to teach “travel bloggers who lead busy lifestyles and want to gain real hands on knowledge.”

traverse-logo

So not wanting to disappoint, I have sensed some keen interest in my own travel video editing workshop and would love to make sure that what I choose to teach that day is useful to everyone in attendance.

Unfortunately, video editing is not something that can be perfected in a day, so my decision on what to teach would be based on what will actually be useful to those attending my workshop. So to settle this matter and get a little insight before Traverse, please select one of the choices below.

The first choice is for a “Simple Intro to Video Editing” which will cover the very basics such as importing clips, getting familiar with an editing interface, choosing cuts and placing them on the timeline as well as adding music and basic fading. The second choice is for  a “More Advanced Video Editing Tips” workshop where I will cover certain aspects that youtube can’t teach you such as levels for different kinds of audio, effective intro and outro transitions, project management and rendering for the web as well as some youtube channel optimisation techniques to make sure your videos get seen online.

If you are however inclined to choose the first option, I would honestly recommend watching this playlist as it is a great place to get yourself up to speed with editing on Premiere pro. I will be doing the workshop on Premiere pro, but the skills I hope to teach everyone are easily transferable to any editing system. So please do pick an option below and let me know what I should focus on in my workshop. Thanks and I hope to see you all at 14:40 in Room 1.

Regards,

Greg Brand – Creative Director

If you live in London, and you love great BBQ, you have no doubt heard of Bodeans.
This last weekend they celebrated a decade of great BBQ with a night of Ribs, Butts and Rock n Roll called ButtStock 2012.

Travizeo was invited along to film the festivities and we were able to snap a few quick stills which you can see below.

If you would like to see all the videos we are busy editing, please subscribe to our youtube channel here

Back in 2002 Andre Blais had a dream – to bring the taste, the style, the soul of his beloved Kansas City barbecue to London town.

10 years later, the Bodean’s family of diner-delis goes from strength to strength – the result of a tireless team effort dedicated to living the dream.

Ice hockey and all-round sports nut Andre is a team player, and among his big hitters are award-winning chefs making sure that when you eat at Bodean’s you’re getting the real thing just as surely as if you were sitting 3775 miles away in KC, USA.

A massive Thanks you to Boss Hog Andre Blais for inviting us to this awesome event. Here’s to another 10 years of great Bodeans BBQ!

Video Blogging or Vlogging has no doubt become a very important part of our culture.
Youtube is practically bursting at the seems with amazing vloggers, some of whom have been able to make a living out of talking to camera.
With the rise of online video, businesses have begun to sit up and take notice of these vloggers who have thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of followers.
The same thing is starting to happen in the travel industry, with companies such as Contiki taking groups of youtube vloggers on amazing trips around the world, in a group effort to showcase their products. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

It has, for a while now, been an idea of ours to get more travel bloggers to start vlogging, as we think they already have half of what it takes to become a great vlogger.
1. They are passionate about travel
2. They know how to research a good travel story
and 3. They are passionate about travel (Yes, it’s very important to be passionate about your subject matter)

We have met more than a few travel bloggers in the UK, who fit the bill perfectly, aside from 2 small yet necessary traits.
1. Knowing how to use a camera properly and how to edit videos
and 2. Being able to confidently talk to camera.

Even I suffer from a lack on confidence in front of the camera, so here is what we are planning to do:

Travizeo, the travel video agency in partnership with renowned travel bloggers Four Jandals, and the worlds biggest and best resource of online travel videos Tripfilms, have created the “Travel Blogger to Travel Vlogger” workshop and online course for any travel bloggers who are interested in learning how to create successful and engaging travel video content.

If this sounds like you, all you need to do is send us an email to hello@travizeo with the subject
“Travel Blogger to Vlogger”

Tell us a little about yourself and your travel blog, why you would like to be a part of this and what equipment you already have to work with, and remember, even an iPhone can be used to create great travel videos.

The physical workshops will be held in Brighton – UK, once or twice every few months, but we welcome anyone from around the world to enrol in our online workshop.

You might be asking yourself about now “how much is all of this going to cost” and we are very glad to say “nothing at all”
You will just need to get yourself down to the venue every time we have a workshop.

We look forward to hearing from you and getting started on this exciting project!!

As many of you may already know, our lovely clients at Mark Warner Holidays asked us to create a series of videos about their summer holiday packages. The campaign was so successful, they asked us to come back and create another series of videos about their winter holidays.
The travizeo team spent 2 weeks at various Mark Warner Chalet Hotels in Val d’Isere and Tignes in the French Alps, but it was no holiday at all. Our camera team, Greg and Carole, came back with over 740 Gigabytes worth of footage. Shooting almost 40 interviews with various family’s, guests and Mark Warner staff on the latest Canon C300 and 5Dmk3 cinema Cameras.
The editing was soon underway and Mark Warner now have 7 new experiential videos, 10 ‘How to’ videos and 3 Recruitment videos as well. Our amazing sound producer Paul Hamlin created all the music you will hear in the videos.  We will slowly be releasing all the videos onto the Mark Warner Website as well as here on Travizeo. So please subscribe and tune in each week for a new video.
Here is the first of the experiential videos, an ‘Introduction to Mark Warner Skiing Holidays.’

If you think your travel brand or destination could also use some targeted online marketing, then we do have a lot to chat about.

We found a fantastic article this morning written by Neil Perry of Poptent and just had to share…

“There’s a fast-emerging trend we are seeing as a producer of videos for both major brands and agencies: the emergence of “stories” as the next big vehicle for brand communication.  At least a dozen of our clients have undertaken projects to start producing human-interest stories via video to promote their brands, so it bears a closer look for anyone in the video and broader marketing industries:

In a world that proclaims “Content is king,” it is these stories that are showing up as the next big thing.  Whether it’s an auto manufacturing company asking folks to look back into their past with their very first (insert brand here) car, or a mom reflecting on the first cake she baked from a box and how it made her feel, brands are encouraging consumers to be a  part of the  story by recalling their own experiences.

The resulting human interest stories, with a specific brand as a centerpiece, are being utilized in a number of creative ways. For example, the videos are showing up on a brand’s Web site as personal brand commentary to humanize and personalize their corporate website.  Equally or even more common, the video stories are used as a part of content on Facebook and other social-sharing sites. These videos are perfect complements to commercials that are uploaded on brand pages on YouTube, too.

There are a few unique benefits from these video stories for brands:

1.  The videos come across as authentic (if shot correctly).  They are not stylized, or stuffy, or corporate.  They are real people sharing real memories that reflect positively on a brand.

2.  Then, there’s the endorsement by a satisfied customer expressed in warm, friendly, non-salesy manner.  These testimonials, even when referring to the brand in memories from 10-15 years ago, open the door for future product trial and adoption by consumers.

3.  And finally, these stories personalize the brand.  They bring the brand down to the consumer level, which is appreciated by the consumer, and proves to be very motivational. It is this personalization of the brand that results in shareability.

Practically no one is going to share a video that’s nothing more than a typical commercial featuring a new Mustang or other new car, but they might share a touching story of how someone felt about their first Mustang 10, 20 or even 30 years ago, and how they felt that first day cruising down the highway with the top down.

Stories, especially those in video form, will live on with the Internet as long as we all make an effort to ensure that they are “findable”.  As we all know, video already indexes well with search engines. Proper tagging and placing in various media will only help in sharing a brand’s stories.

This trend will be worth watching in the coming months, as video stories have the promise to personalize brands in an authentic way.”

Working in the online video field, we are bombarded by blogs, posts and forum discussions about video marketing, what works and what doesn’t. I think this can be a very daunting field for anyone who may be new to video marketing or creating a video. For instance, like an online travel marketing manager, who recently received an e-mail from his or her MD about “why does our competition have a video on their website and we dont?”

Many a marketing team have come up against this, and to be honest, the way that online marketing is embracing video, many many more will still have to deal with this. So I’m hoping this post can shed a little light into what we think are the most important factors to consider when looking into online video marketing.

Firstly… Many times we are approached and asked to create a video for a client. Our very first question is usually “why?” It’s not that we don’t like working and earning an income, it’s just that online video can take on so many different forms, and each one would have an intended purpose. For example, to increase conversion, to create as link bait and for use in seeding, to situate our client as a market expert and leader in that sector or simply to engage with their target audience and tell them a little more about who the company is, what they do and how awesome they are. It is for this reason that we ask “why?”

Once we have been able to figure out why our client needs video, the task of deciding what kind of video and how many to create becomes a lot more apparent. For example, one of our clients was not seeing a great deal of conversion on their site. (simply put, this meant people were browsing but not buying) For this reason it was decided to create 9 uniques videos to showcase what the holidays had to offer. 9 short 2min videos that covered everything from Sailing to Tennis and childcare. It is safe to say that the videos we created for Mark Warner have done their job exceedingly well and the site’s conversion rate has shot through the roof. Our client saw such great results with the summer videos that we were asked to come back and do the same for their winter holidays.

The second most important consideration is budget. Have a very clear idea of what can be spent on your video marketing. I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said that a good quality video will undoubtedly cost you more, however in the same breath, video has become a lot cheaper to produce over the years. Many years ago producing a 30 second TV advert could cost you anywhere from £10K to £100K+, but great strides have been made in modern camera and editing technology to bring the price down and the quality up. A good DSLR HD camera (the same camera’s we use for most productions) can cost anywhere between £500 and £3K. Im not saying it will be cheaper and easier for you to do it yourself, but those with the know how are able to charge less for their services now days. A reputable camera man or woman should be charging between £250-£500 per day, depending on their skill and experience, but for a simple interview you won’t be requiring Peter Jackson’s DOP (Director of Photography). So Depending on your budget, a reputable production company or freelancer will be able to tell you what you are able to get for the budget you have. Always ask to see examples of their work and ask for a ball park figure on what that specific production cost, how much time was spent on it and how many crew were used. This should start giving you an idea of what a similar quality video for your travel brand may cost.

Create your brief. A very important and sometimes overlooked part of the process for the marketing department. A good brief will ensure that your goals and aims set out above are adhered to by the video producers. Most video directors, camera people and editors are creative by nature and excel at what they do. For this reason never expect that they will know your marketing mix and target audience. For example, your destination is solely focused on couples holidays. The shoot is well underway and the camera man has spent the last few hours shooting some absolutely amazing shots of a family swimming and enjoying the beach. Unfortunately though, these shots can never be used and the camera man has wasted a few hours and thus your money on shooting the wrong content. A brief does not have to be a 20 page document outlining your entire marketing plan from what font you use to your brand colours. Simply put down what you think are going to be the most important things to focus on. If you are creating more than one video, think about writing a small bullet pointed paragraph on each section of the video including any shots you think would work in this video. Examples of those shots are a great way of getting your video crew on the same page. Include as many youtube links as you want to shots that you like. Include the timecode (min:sec) so they know exactly which shots you are talking about. Many production companies and freelancers may have already created countless types of online video marketing material, and will therefore have a very good understanding of what works and what doesn’t. Work in partnership with your video crew to set out a brief that everyone is in agreement with. This will make your production process more… well, productive.

There are many many more factors to consider, but we will leave those for another post.
Please do let us know, if you found this useful, in the comments below.

Youtube has never been know for creating great ‘click trhough rates’ for businesses. The boys at google/youtube are clever like that. Why on earth would they want you to go anywhere else and risk loosing your dwell time on their site? That being said, at the same time Youtube is a massive tool for creating engagement with potential target markets and catching the attention of an entirely new audience.
In the past, people would watch your videos, but would hardly ever click through to your website as most times your url was hidden in the description box.
Fortunately, A lot of that has changed over the last year, with more and more functionality being brought to the site. Functionality such as the “call to action” overlays which can considerably increase traffic to your site via youtube. The best of it all though, is that it doesn’t actually cost you anything to do this. It’s quite simple to set up and different overlays can be placed on different videos, depending on where you would like people to divert to. For example, have a look at our video on this page.

We have recently setup our new business facebook page, and where trying to encourage some of our youtube audience to ‘like’ us. Since setting up the ‘call to action’ overlay we have indeed seen an increase in new facebook fans.
